Apple Corporation Beats, Neighborhood Grocer Retreats

An Apple beat each quarter keeps Corporate America alive and well. Meanwhile, small, family owned businesses that add value and charm to the neighborhood cannot compete with the big-box, parking lot retailers and are forced to close up shop.

From Business Insider: "Apple's earnings numbers are out! It's another blow out quarter for Apple, and the stock is up 7% after-hours. It beat on revenue and earnings. It also beat on iPhone sales."

From Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: "But after April 30, Engel's longtime customers will have to shop elsewhere. Proprietor Claire Engel is bowing to modern realities and closing the shop her father opened 46 years ago in the same space on Murray Avenue. 'Everything has a time,' she said Monday, misting up a bit. 'You don't see many small, independent hardware stores, pharmacies or bookstores anymore, and it's the same for us.' Engel's was the last of three green grocers that once shared the same block, when that part of Murray had a critical mass of butchers, bakers and delis, creating foot traffic for each other."
